moon energy and moon cycle

With the New Moon tonight at 11 p.m. (9 Feb. ‘24) and the Lunar New Year tomorrow (10 Feb. ‘24) I wanted to touch briefly on what moon energy and the moon cycle are.

what is moon energy?

In the natural world, the moon influences the tide continuously every six hours with varying intensity depending on the time of the year and meteorology.

In astrology, the moon and its’ placement in your birth chart describes your emotional life - meaning your moods, your sensitivity, your emotional reaction and how you respond emotionally to stressors. The following are attributed to the moon: night time, dream state, internal world, feminine energy, emotions, psyche, intuition, abstract and unconsciousness.

moon energy according to the moon sign

Aries - impulsive, bright, energetic, independent

Taurus - practical, stamina, stability, loyal, looking for security

Gemini - ever-changing, flexible, quick, talks a lot about feelings

Cancer - emotional, protective, concerned, caring

Leo - expressive, wants to be seen and heard, impulsive

Virgo - detail-oriented, critical, (self-)judgmental

Libra - wants harmony, constantly balancing out, attached, insecure, unsure

Scorpio - highly sensitive, intuitive, possessive, obsessive

Sagittarius - enthusiastic, blunt, bold, resilient

Capricorn - self-controlled, patient, stable, solid

Aquarius - other-worldly, detached, intuitive, rebellious

what are the moon phases?

There seems to be a spreading interest in lunar living, i.e., living in sync with the moon phases. This is a tradition from pre-industrial revolution time. I’m not claiming that lunar living is something that is practical for our busy and striving life styles, but in general people resonate with lunar living because it grounds them and raises their resilience in dealing with the stresses of the 21st century.

🌑 New Moon

This is the beginning of the cycle - it’s a time for spiritual cleansing, letting go of mental burden, setting new goals for the next 28 days, making plans for the future and paying attention to your dreams (I keep paper and pen by the side of the bed).

This phase begins 1-3½ days after the Waning Crescent (Balsamic) Moon.

🌒 Waxing Crescent Moon

The growing light illuminates intentions and intuition - now’s the time to move forward with courage and faith and explore your dreams.

This phase begins 3½-7 days after the New Moon.

🌓 First Quarter Moon

The light gets stronger and brings focus to maximise intentions - it’s time for committing to your aspirations with confidence and facing your challenges.

This phase begins 7-10½ days after the New Moon.

🌔 Waxing Gibbous Moon

The increasing energy nurtures hopes and dreams until visible in the Full Moon - it’s time for staying on course, make slight tweaks or adjustments to plans and honing in on your goal.

This phase begins 10½-15 days after the New Moon.

🌕 Full Moon

The energy is abundant - it’s time to bring your plans to fruition (make-or-break) and pay gratitude for the learning, it’s also a time of cleansing and letting go.

This phase begins 15-18 ½ days after the New Moon.

In a future post, I will explain about a ritual called “Full Moon - Write and Burn” and how you might benefit from this.

🌖 Waning Gibbous (Disseminating) Moon

The energy is subsiding - it’s time for reflection, learning and refining your goals based on the lessons you’ve learned.

Take a deep breath and relax, accept what is and re-group.

This phase begins 3 ½ -7 days after the Full Moon.

🌗 Third (Last) Quarter Moon

The light gets weaker - it’s time to acknowledge what you know as your truth, come into balance and trust in the process; it’s also a time of (self-)forgiveness.

This phase begins 7-10 ½ days after the Full Moon.

🌘 Waning Crescent (Balsamic) Moon

The end of the cycle - it’s time for surrender and healing, renewal and inward reflection, into a thoughtful darkness as a new cycle begins and release what’s not working for you - soothing your soul.

This phase begins around 10 ½ days after the Full Moon and continues into the beginning of the New Moon.

In a future post, I will explain about a ritual called “Dark of the Moon - Write and Burn” and how you might benefit from this.
